Mounting a signalboard to a S7-1200 CPU
The central processing units of the SIMATIC S7-1200 are designed as Compact CPUs with integrated I/Os. Their modular design can be used to increase the configuration limits or to adapt the controller to new tasks: through mounting a Signal Board on the CPU or adding separate signal modules.
Signal modules can be connected to the right of the CPU to further extend the digital or analog IO capacity. CPU 1212C accepts up to two, CPU 1214C, CPU 1215C and CPU 1217C both accept up to eight signal modules.

A continuous communication down to the lowest field level ensures enhanced use of the functions and performance capability of sensors and actuators. Enhanced use of sensors and actuators allows you to operate your machines and plants more productively.
No data other than the actual process value can be exchanged via the standard interfaces (digital, analog) used at the sensor/actuator level. Sensors and actuators with integrated intelligence are now used for increasingly complex functions and require a communication interface tailored to these requirements.
IO-Link is an innovative, point-to-point communication interface for the sensor/actuator area that is specified in IEC 61131-9.

Integrated PROFINET communication
SIMATIC S7-1200 supports communication via PROFINET – the open, manufacturer-independent standard (IEC 61158/61784). PROFINET is 100% Ethernet and stands for maximum transparency, open standard communication via TCP/IP, network security and simultaneous real-time communication.
The integrated PROFINET interface in SIMATIC S7-1200 can be used for programming the CPU and for communication with SIMATIC HMI Basic Panels for visualization, but also for communication with other controllers or IO devices such as drives.

SIMATIC STEP 7 Basic (TIA Portal) is a price-optimized subset of STEP 7 Professional controller software in the TIA Portal that can be used for engineering SIMATIC S7-1200 micro controllers and configuration of SIMATIC HMI Basic Panels, as WinCC Basic is part of the software package.
SIMATIC STEP 7 Basic offers the same benefits as STEP 7 Professional engineering software thanks to its integration into the TIA Portal engineering framework, e.g. direct online diagnostics, easy creation of technology objects and also the library concept for time-saving, efficient work and programming components reuse.
STEP 7 Basic (TIA Portal) supports the IEC programming languages LAD (Ladder Diagram) as well as FBD (Function Block Diagram) and SC (structured text).
